Roster Requirements
- Prior to the Hukporti conversion and Matt Ryan Signing (discussed below), the Knicks had 12 Standard Contracts.
- Teams are only permitted to fall under 14 Standard Contracts for 14 consecutive days maximum and 28 total days throughout the Regular Season.
- Signing Hukporti and Ryan puts the Knicks at the required 14 Standard Contracts.
Hukporti Conversion Keeps NYK Below the Second Apron
- Hukporti converts from a Two-Way Contract to a Rest-of-Season Contract for two seasons;
- Hukporti’s first-year salary is a prorated minimum salary for 0 Years of Service (YOS), $1,064,049:
- 168 day remaining in Regular Season, divided by 174 Total Regular Season Days, multiplied by $1,157,153 (full minimum salary for 0 YOS)
- Converting their 2024 2nd Round Pick, the Knicks save $855,509 in Team Salary for the following reasons:
- To encourage Teams to sign veteran free agents, the applicable minimum salary for older players is subsidized down to that of a player with 2 YOS ($2,087,519, which is prorated to $1,919,588 as of 11/5/24);
- With that same intention, any free agent minimum with less than 2 YOS of service is also increased to the salary of 2 YOS as calculated for Team Salary;
- However, because Hukporti is a draft pick, and not a free agent, the Knicks get to use the minimum salary for 0 YOS. Had they signed any free agent to a minimum contract, they would have had to use the $1,919,599, as they did when signing Matt Ryan on the same day.
- The savings allow the Knicks to fall $589,222 under the Second Apron, where they are hard-capped and thus are unable to exceed.
