Transaction Summary

  1. MIN waived P.J. Dozier on 12/28/24, clears waivers on 12/30/2024;
  2. Dozier was on a 1-year minimum deal with $1 million guaranteed

Cap Discussion

  1. Dozier’s deal had a salary of $2,613,120 based on his 6 Years of Service (YOS), which was subsidized to a cap hit of $2,087,519 for a player with 2 YOS since it’s a one-year minimum contract;
  2. MIN had 15 players with standard contracts, meaning they drop a standard contract and remain in compliance for the remainder of the season
  3. The only player with non-guaranteed salary on the roster is Dozier, who had $1 million of his $2.6 million guaranteed.  Therefore, there was no reason for MIN to release him until the $1 million had accrued, since they would owe him the $1 million regardless.
  4. Dozier’s per-day salary is $15,017 ($2,613,120 / 174). Dozier was on the roster for 70 days, resulting in $1,051,255 in dead salary.
  5. Once the $1 million in per-day salary accrued, MIN waived Dozier, lowering their tax liability.
  6. After waiving Dozier, MIN saves $1,036,264 in team salary, which saves close to $5 million in tax liability (see chart below).
