Cap Discussion
- Utah signed Filipowski with cap space, allowing them to sign him for a higher annual salary than what is typical for Second Round Picks.
- This is a rare contract under the new CBA, where the majority of Second Round Picks are signed using the newly implemented Second Round Pick Exception. With the exception, the maximum a team can pay the player in his first season is the minimum salary for a player with 2 Years of Service (YOS), $2,087,519, so long as he is receiving a four-year deal.
- Oftentimes, even when a Second Round Pick receives four years, he still receives the minimum amount for a player with 0 YOS: $1,157,153, or will receive a shorter contract. As an example, Jonathan Mogbo, who was drafted one spot ahead of Filipowski received a 3-Year deal for the maximum salary of $1,862,265 allowable for a three-year deal when using the exception. Tyler Smith, drafted one spot behind Filipowski, received a four-year deal, but it was for the $1,157,153 minimum.
