Trade Summary
The teams acquired the following assets in this 3-Team Trade:
Cap Discussion
Los Angeles Clippers
- To acquire more salary than sending out, LAC must use the Expanded TPE.
- When sending out $13.3 million, the Expanded TPE allows the team to acquiring the same amount of Outgoing Trade Salary, plus $8,527,000.
- LAC clears Collins’ Incoming Trade Salary by $2.4 million ($20,482,758 + $8,527,000 = $29,009,758).
- LAC is hard capped at the First Apron for using the Expanded TPE.
Miami Heat
- Similar to LAC, MIA must use the Expanded TPE and has the same cushion of $8,527,000.
- MIA clears Powell’s Incoming Trade Salary by $1.4 million ($13,368,512 + $8,527,000 = $21,895,512).
- MIA is hard capped at the First Apron for using the Expanded TPE.
Utah Jazz
- UTA sends out more Outgoing Trade Salary with a single player than was acquired. Therefore, we know UTA will be generating a TPE to use in the future. The question is how to optimize the largest TPE for the future.
- UTA absorbs Love’s Salary into the BAE ($5.1 million), leaving $984,000 remaining.
- UTA absorbs Anderson’s Salary into the NTMLE ($14.1 million), leaving $4.8 million remaining.
- Because UTA was able to absorb both salaries without Collins’ salary, UTA creates a TPE for Collins’ entire $26.5 million salary. This may become the most valuable asset for UTA in this trade.
- UTA is hard capped at the First Apron for using NTMLE and BAE.
Touch Rule
When there is a trade involving two or more teams, the “Touch Rule” is triggered. The touch rule requires a team to “touch” at least two teams (which would be both teams in a 3-team trade like this one). A touch is the sending or receiving of a tradeable asset.
This 3-team trade is straightforward, but to ensure the Touch Rule is satisfied, below is a non-exhaustive list of assets being sent and received by both teams to satisfy the rule:
- LAC – Sent Powell to MIA, received Collins from LAC.
- MIA – Sent Anderson to UTA, received Powell from LAC.
- UTA – Sent Collins to UTA, received Anderson from MIA.
