Cap Discussion
Why Only a 1-Year Extension?
- The reason Curry lands just a 1-year Extension is due to the “Over 38 Rule”
- The Over 38 Rule essentially treats salary subject to the rule (discussed below) as deferred compensation and prorates the salary over the other years of the contract.
- For a full explanation of the Over 38 Rule, click here for Anil Gogna’s breakdown
- To determine if the Over 38 Rule applies, you first assess (i) whether the contract is for 4 or more years (including existing years) and (ii) the age of the player as of 10/1 on the year of its signing.
- Curry’s Extension turns his current contract into a 3-year Contract, thus not subjecting any season to the Over 38 Rule regardless of Curry’s age.
- Note that if he resigned as a Free Agent with the Warriors to a 4-year contract, it would also be exempt from the Over 38 Rule, given that they have Full Bird rights to Curry.
-
- This would mean that the 2027-2028 Season of a hypothetical two-year extension would count as a “Zero Year” and would have to be reallocated over the remaining seasons in the Contract
- As you can see, based on the reallocations of the 2027-2028 Salary, Curry’s salary would far exceed his maximum allowable salary (35% of the salary cap or 105% of his salary in the prior season).*Had Curry signed a 2-year Extension with the allowable 8% raise, his current contract would be for 4 Seasons, subjecting the contract to the Over 38 Rule, as Curry would be 36 as of 10/1 this season
*Curry’s salary in 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 are over the 35%/105% prior salary because because the maximum salary rule limits the salary in the first year of the contract at the time of signing. Curry’s last Extension was in August 2021, and the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 salaries were based on 8% maximum raises after the first year of the Extension.
Warriors Capsheet Outlook
- Curry, Wiggins and Draymond are the only three players with fully-guaranteed salaries entering the 2026-2027 as of right now (Wiggins and Draymond with Player Options).
- The Warriors don’t have any salary guaranteed on their books for the 2027-2028 season, setting themselves up for a rebuild in the next few years.
